THEME   PARTIES

It’s no surprise that the member of First Year Players, as young adults with severe musical theater mania and a taste for anything dramatic, find ways to express themselves with theatrical flair off the stage as well as on it.

The University of Virginia is known not only for its academic excellence and overactive Yik Yak feed – UVA is also a critically acclaimed center for celebration (see Playboy Magazine's 2012 top party school rankings). While some members of the UVA community choose to spend their Friday nights in fraternity house basements wearing clothes that are decently cute but also disposable (because the variety of fluids that may assault one's apparel at these events is so unpredictable and abominable), the members of FYP celebrate in style.

I am talking, of course, about the legendary FYParties.

The Social Chairs of First Year Players are tasked with organizing and executing parties throughout the semester for the enjoyment of the entire organization (and no one else).  Not only does the Social team have to find a location, ensure ample ice cream, and provide for the safety of all in attendance, but the team is also tasked with coming up with a ~theme~ for the party. Attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly.

Excitingly titled parties over the years have encouraged themed thespians to flock to inexplicably named FYP houses like The Box, Le Rêve, and La Dacha to show off their creativity. Some hit themes from years past include "Historical Hotties" (Spring 2012), "Dirty Disney" (Spring 2009), and "Attack of the Nerds" (Fall 2012).

Anyone who has seen a First Year Players show is more than aware of FYP's taste for theatrics. But if you've been lucky enough to attend an FYParty, it's clear that the dramatic flair of the Players follows them wherever they go – even on Friday nights.

Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions
