The world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical that is one of the theatre’s finest accomplishments.Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. -MTI

Director's Notes
For over 50 years, West Side Story has been one of theatre’s most recognizable accomplishments. I believe the longevity of this show originates in its subject matter: prejudice, violence and hate. An incredibly demanding show, I am immensely grateful to those talented individuals who made it possible—Logan and the production staff, Katie and the technical staff, the artistic staff, orchestra, and cast—for once again having the courage to set our goals high, and challenge every part of FYP in new, exciting ways.
With remarkable devotion and skillfulness, the pit orchestra has brought the vibrancy to Bernstein’s demanding and beautiful score, which never ceases to wonder. Their camaraderie is a joy to watch. The technical crew has surpassed all limitations with their resourcefulness as well. They have made these past few weeks magical as we saw everything coming together.
I have been blessed with an Artistic Staff and stage management team filled with the most extraordinary people that I have every been fortunate enough to know. Their countless contributions have brought life to West Side Story. I cannot thank them enough for their spirit, dedication, creativity, unwavering patience, and most of all friendship: ustedes son el brillo del sol en mi vida.
Creating West Side Story with the twenty-seven incredible individuals that make up the cast has been an absolute gift. Their talent, energy, and enthusiasm for FYP is overwhelming. Every rehearsal with them brings new discoveries, and they rise to any challenge they encounter with determination and perseverance. But the most amazing thing about this cast is the complete support, loyalty, and friendship they have developed for their fellow cast members. It would be an enormous challenge to find a closer group, and I am grateful to have shared this experience with them.
West Side Story shocks us into the reality that love can be destroyed by the broken world we live in…but more importantly how love can rebuild it. We are forced to question: How did the world get to be this way? What will it take to change it? Ultimately we hold responsibility for our own actions. Dreams don’t simply happen to us—we must make them happen. The characters of West Side Story are extremely conscious of the immediacy of their actions: their lives depend on “what happens now, in this moment, tonight.” They teach us to cherish every minute we are given. I know we in FYP have treasured every moment this semester:
"Even if it only lasts from one night to the last, it’s worth the world"
--Mia Joshi, Director
Producer's Notes
On behalf of First Year Players, thank you for coming! The support of family, friends, students, and community members is what makes this possible and more importantly, worthwhile.
The journey to what you will see tonight began with a question: "How do we follow a musical likeUrinetown?" How are we to grow as a musical theater organization after having just performed a show that mercilessly (and hysterically) cuts down the building blocks of what we do? After some reflection, it quickly became apparent that the appropriate response to such a modern work was to explore a beautiful classic like West Side Story.
What makes a challenging show like West Side Story possible is the love and dedication of nearly two hundred people. Having been involved in FYP for three years, I felt I had become quite acquainted with the ins and outs of the organization, but it wasn’t until this semester, my first as Producer, that I truly saw just how much work goes on outside of the spotlight. For so many semesters, my involvement had required the dedication to smaller, specific tasks to be charged with guiding the entire organization was both extraordinarily exciting and incredibly intimidating. It has been an honor and a humbling experience to be entrusted with the care of what I have considered to be my home for the past three years. I want to thank the members of FYP for giving me this opportunity, I am so lucky to work with such talented individuals.
I could not imagine the incredible show you will see tonight without the passion of the director, Mia Joshi; her quiet leadership taps into the potential of everyone around her. Mia, it was a pleasure to work with you and I hope you are as proud as I am of what you have helped to accomplish.
I must also thank Jessie Wright for being the absolute best number two a guy could ask for and Erin McDonald for not only being a joy to work with but for being one of the first to believe in my abilities as Producer, thank you for everything.
While I cannot thank everyone who made this night possible, I cannot go without thanking my dear friend, Katie Ulmer. Katie, we would not be where we are today if it weren’t for your leadership and organization. It’s been a crazy ride since those nights in Cabell Hall, and I am fortunate to have had you along for the ride.
To the staff, cast, pit, and tech: You all should be so proud of the mark you have made on this incredible show. This is your night, enjoy it.
To the audience: I cannot thank you enough for your support, you are the reason we do what we do.
Once again, thank you all for coming and enjoy the show!
