Fall 2009: Urinetown
Music and Lyrics by: Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis
Book by: Greg Kotis
"One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, URINETOWN catapults the "comedic romp" into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter." -MTI

Director's Notes
Urinetown is a very serious piece of theatre. This show is about more than the underlying themes of self-determination and freedom, this show is about peeing. Whenever you like, in whatever location you like, and with whomever you like. We have always loved Urinetown…wait, that’s not true. Same hated the show when he first saw it, but Jeff saw a really well-funded high school production and enjoyed it immensely. And so, Urinetown for FYP was born.
It began with a dream. A dream that could easily be realized through the impressively-established framework of First Year Players. Induced by weeks of YouTube-video-watching and Jeff whispering out the Act I Finale in Sam’s ear while he tried to sleep, the pair agreed that Urinetown was the perfect show for FYP Fall 2009. With the hard part accomplished, all that remained was to form the ideal artistic staff, build a set and an orchestra, find the perfect cast, and teach them the vocals, choreography, and scenes for the entire show. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Wait, what’s that? We have less than 2 months to do it in? Oh. Easy peasy.
Thanks to the unwavering confidence and fearless revolutionary spirits of Jeff and Sam, they managed to find an incredibly talented a-staff, orchestra, tech crew, and cast. Thanks you UVA Admissions Board: without you, none of these people would be here, and these notes would never exist.
All jokes aside, we have been amazingly blessed with wonderful people on this journey from start to finish. There’s nothing better than direction a show with your best friend, except when you also have the unwavering support, dedication, and friendship of everyone else involved in the project. Please join us in thanking everyone from the production staff, to the technical crew, to the actors, the instrumentalists, and the FYP family. Together we have produced a semester’s experience that was successful not only theatrically, but emotionally as well. Please enjoy the show. And welcome—to Urinetown (the musical)!
Love,
Jeff and Sam
Producer's Notes
Welcome to First Year Players’ performance of Urinetown! I’d like to take a few lines to thanks those people that have been absolutely critical tome keeping my sanity this past year in my run as producer. Firstly I must thank Lauren Paullin. As my business manager, my roommate and one of my best friends, she has worked with me through the toughest of situations. Lauren, I am not sure I would have made it through without you there. I must thank our technical director, Mr. Robert Eshleman, for his ability to do more things than I previously thought humanly possible, and for doing them all with a cool head. Little, you make my life so much brighter with your warm hugs and your wonderful smile. Jake Frazier, my assistant producer this semester has been a constant source of comfort for me, whether he knows it or not. I have always felt that he would be there for anything I needed, whether in a professional facet or otherwise, and that is quite the safety net for my mind. Our stunningly handsome directors this semester, Mr. Jeff Luppino-Esposito and Mr. Sam Reeder, have done an absolutely exquisite job, as you all are about to see. My producerly predecessors Mr. James Villarubia and Mr. Brendt Harris have both been utterly inseparable from any success I may have had in this job. You two are the mostly stripped screws that hold together the shoddily made bench that is my heart. To the rest of my production staff, I offer my most sincere gratitude for all of you hard work, dedication, and commitment to this organization.
We advertise in the brochure, but FYP truly is student run theatre. Just how true this is came as a surprise to my second year self, fresh off my naïve first year run in tech. while I knew that we built everything, I never understood how true that is in the metaphorical sense. These shows do not simply happen and FYP does not simply continue on every year out of institutional inertia. Each semester a fresh crop of members put their skills and talents to use in order to make every part of this organization go. Without the strong bonds that we form, our love for the stage and for each other, this organization would have been in shambles before it even started. However, seeing as FYP started here at the University in 1980, it is clear that shambles are not in our future. I am proud to call myself an FYPer.
Love Love Love,
Lisa
