Spring 1996: Jesus Christ Superstar
Music By: Andrew Lloyd Webber
Lyrics by: Tim Rice
Jesus Christ Superstar is the story of Christ's Passion told in the vernacular. It is an account of the last seven days of Jesus' life, from when he entered Jerusalem to the crucifixion, seen from the point of view of Judas Iscariot and set to a rock soundtrack. It carries the themes of the modern fable - a declining star who was initially idolized, torn apart by his fickle fans. It opened in October of 1971 on Broadway in the Mark Hellinger Theater.

Director's Notes
I'd like to give thanks to my staff, especially to Bill, Jon, and Amy Rogers. I'd like to give special thanks to the entire cast. Without them, the show would not be possible. And I'd like to give an extra special thanks to the audience. Thank you for coming tonight. This show, Jesus Christ Superstar, is a very controversial show, and has been since the day it came out. Religion is a difficult subject that few of us are able to talk about. But in order to understand why certain things are done in the name of religion, we must talk about it.
This is not presented as an actual history of what happened to Jesus of Nazareth. It is just an interpretation of what could have happened. And in that interpretation, an effort to find out why what happened happened and why He did what He did. I can't ever claim to know what happened and who Jesus of Nazareth really was. But I must try to understand and I hope you will try to understand with me.
