Fall 1998: Guys and Dolls
Book and by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows
Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser
Guys and Dolls is the story of love, money, and salvation in New York City. The plot begins as gambler Nathan Detroit, accompanied by his cohorts Nicely-Nicely Johnson and Benny Southstreet, is unable to find a location in which to hold his floating crap game. He needs to secure $1000 with which he can bribe for himself a place for the game. So, he makes a bet with successful gambler Sky Masterson that Sky cannot take Sarah Brown (a sergeant at the Save-a-Soul Mission) to Havana for a day. Not only does Sky try to take Sarah to Havana, but he also tries to win her heart. Meanwhile, Nathan has romantic troubles of his own. He constantly attempts to stay one step ahead of his fiancee, Miss Adelaide, who wants to get him to actually marry her after a decade-long engagement and is also trying to set him on the straight and narrow path.

Director's Notes
This semester has gone by very quickly. I think I can say that directing this show has been the most stressful, difficult, enjoyable, and fulfilling experience I have had in my college career. It hasn't been easy. There were a lot of ups and downs, but we finally made it. I just want to thank my co-director Stephanie, Assistant Director (she was more like a third director) Jaime Gray, my wonderful sstage manager, Amie, and her assistants Tara and Brooke, and most importantly, the cast. I have never had the privelege of working with a more talented group of actors, dancers, and singers. I would also like to thank the tech staff. No one appreciates the endless hours of designing and building and painting that they put in, not to mention having to deal with fickle directors with active imaginations. Thank you, everybody, enjoy the show...
Matt Gordon, Co-Director, Spring '98
It is hard to believe that two years ago I was on an FYP stage, and now I am directing. From the moment we were given the nod in December, I have been so excited and eager to get on with the show. Each dday, I looked forward to rehearsal, and now, I wish I could go back and take more time. I am not ready for this to end. I do know that I could never have done this alone. Thanks so much Matt, John, Dana, David, Amanda, Amie, Jaime, and Ben for working your butts off for this hsow. Cast, I am so proud of you. You have come so far so fast, and I truly feel this show has been a team effort. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication. You amaze me. Tech, pit, and staff, I am so glad to be involved with such talented people. Friends and family, thanks for your support and understanding. I love you. Directing has been fun, nerve-wracking, tense, crazy, and one of the most enjoyable experiences I will never forget.
Stephanie Timmons, Co-Director, Spring '98

Mission Statement for First Year Players:
First Year Players exists to provide the University of Virginia community with quality theatre productions featuring first year performers. First Year Players also serves to aid first year students with adjustment to University life by providing an opportunity for students with common interests to interact in both a theatrical and social setting.
The great thing about FYP is that every semester, something new happens. This semester Beth Miller, our historian, and Will Slusher, our webmaster have worked hard to make FYP more visible and accessible to the student body and our alumni. Our new website, which can be accessed at http://scs.student.virginia.edu/~fyplayrs, is complete with a photo book and an alumni database (if you're an alum, please visit and sign up, we'd love to know what you're up to!). I'd like to give a quick work of thanks to my assistant, Amber, who has helped me this semester as I juggled FYP, Curse of the Starving Class, and some semblance of an academic career. This semester's cast, tech, and staff have worked really well together and have made my last semester with FYP a blast. Finally, I would like to congratulate Stephanie and Matt for bringing this cast and show together.
