Director's Notes
Good times. Great friends. Great Performances. That is what First Year Players is all about. And it's what keeps its alumni coming back for more. FYP made my first year at UVA. A week into classes and I already had a full time activity and at least 30 other people to say hi to as I walked to class - a small but important triumph for someone living in a new place! It made adjusting to life at college a lot easier, not to mention the fact that it was the most fun I had ever had being in a play! So I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to not only continue my involvement with this wonderful organization but to be able to give back by being a part of the newest crop of first years' FYP experience. Directing has been one of my greatest challenges: an especially daunting task for someone who spent most of her "theatrical career" on-stage rather than behind it. Suddenly I was confronted with a million questions about the set, lighting, props, where to enter and exit from....all things I had never given much thought to. But it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. I learned more than I thought possible about the work that goes into doing a show (such as answering the aforementioned questions!) I could not have asked for a better semester! As much as I would love to take all the credit for the wonderful performance you are going to see tonight, I cannot. There are so many people who have been involved and their hard work and dedication is seen in the quality of the show. And I would be remiss if I did not thank them:
-To the rest of the Artistic Staff: This is as much your show as it is mine. I have been amazed by your patience, enthusiasm, and creativity. Words cannot express how much you all have meant to me this semester. Thanks for keeping me sane! I am deeply grateful for everything.
-To the Cast: Wow. You all have exceeded all my hopes and expectations! All your hard work (especially in the last two weeks) has really paid off - this is an unbelievable show! I feel incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to not only work with you amazingly talented people, but to really get to know you too. Believe it or not, but I am going to miss spending 20 hours a week with you! Thanks for making rehearsals fun!
-To Emily Newhouse and Ryan Johnson (our fabulous producers): Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity. Your unending support and advice has been a Godsend and I can in no way thank you enough!
-To the Tech Crew: Thank you for making our vision of the set into reality. You are the unsung heroes of this production, but we all realize it would not have been possible to do this show without you!
I guess all that is left to say is .. Enjoy the show!!
