Fall 2001: Crazy for You

Words by Ken Ludwig
Music and Lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin

Billed as the "New Gershwin Musical," this 1992 Tony Award-winning "Best Musical" features a collection of 18 great songs from the George and Ira Gershwin cannon, including "Embraceable You, They Can't Take That Away From Me, I Got Rhythm, and Someone To Watch Over Me." The zany plot concerns a playboy banker sent by his no-nonsense mother to foreclose on an old theatre in Deadrock, Nevada, where he becomes both stage struck and love struck by the only girl in the town of 157 men!

Director's Notes

First Year Players has been an integral part of my experience at UVa. From this group, I have met an array of diversely talented people, including some of my best friends. My passion for theatre brought me to FYP, and it is happiness that keeps me involved.

To my artistic staff: I heart each and every one of you. Thank you for your dedication and for all the times you’ve made me laugh. I’ve had more fun on staff than I’ve had in all my other semesters with FYP – and that’s a hard thing to top. Everyday I looked forward to working with you, and now that the show is in its last stages, I don’t know what I’m going to do without you next semester. From what seemed like constants hell weeks with academics, you guys were always there for me, and I hope you guys realize how much that means to me. I am honored and proud to have worked with each of you. Thank you for your incredible abilities, wonderful personalities, and stellar talent. Who could ask for anything more.

To my cast: FYP made my first year both fantastic and memorable – I hope that I’ve been able to give you guys the same experience. I hope you guys have made lasting friendships and will continue to be involved during your next three years. The talent you possess is astonishing, but it still cannot top the person that each of you are. Your interactions on stage are filled with chemistry and panache. Be proud of the work you’ve accomplished and the gift you present each night. I can’t thank you enough, so I hope you can tell by my expressions that I am crazy for you.

To the rest of FYP: Thanks for all the support. The pit is amazing – I think it’s the best that FYP’s had in many years. Thanks tech for dealing under such time constraints – your dedication is obvious. I hope that my experience on a-staff will encourage many of you guys to consider a position – you won’t regret it.

To the audience: We share with you tonight a small glimpse of our lives from the last three months. It is your laughter and support that allows FYP to continue to perform year after year. A lot of heart went into making this production possible, but without you the show would never be fully realized. Your presence means a lot to us and we hope you enjoy the show!

Producer's Notes

I never meant to get involved in theater, but somehow, first year, I stumbled into First Year Players, and my life has honestly never been the same. I have grown up so much since then, and it is all due to FYP. I do not have the words to express what First Year Players has meant to me during my four years here. As technical director last year, I was surrounded by an amazingly talented group of people. I thought my life could never get better. I was wrong. This year, First Year Players has shown me the true meaning of family.

To the cast: You are all amazing. Thanks for all your hard work. Remember to enjoy every second of this show. I promise you will make it when it is over.

To the staff: I have been so impressed by the amount of work you have all put into this semester’s show. Thanks for your dedication and long hours!

To “Tek”: You all know how much I love you. Thanks for your support and for all that you do. Your work is appreciated so much more than you could know.

To the pit: You are the unsung heroes of the show. Thanks for all your enthusiasm and talent.

To all of FYP: I love each and every one of you so much more than you could know. You have truly become my family at UVA. Thank you for letting me be your “Mom” away from home. Whether rehearsal, Wednesday night coffee, staff meeting, or time I have just spent hanging out with you all, I have loved every minute. Thanks for everything!

To the audience: Thank you for attending. Without you, we would have no reason to perform. I hope you appreciate all the talent before you. Enjoy the show!
