Barnum: Fall 1986

Music by Cy Coleman
Lyrics by Michael Stewart
Book by Mark Bramble

Barnum is based on the true story of P.T. Barnum and his rise to fame in the freakshow and circus business. Barnum was a mastermind in marketing and advertising, both in his shows and his American Museum. The acts that traveled with him included Jumbo, the elephant, General Tom Thumb, a dwarf, Joice Heth, the world's oldest woman, who was touted as being 161 years old, and the fabulous Jenny Lind, a Scandinavian soprano known as the Swedish Nightingale. The show traces Barnum's career, his marriage to wife Charity, and his daily life, and contains such songs as "There's a Sucker Born Every Minute."
