Spring 1991: A Chorus Line

Marvin Hamlisch wrote A Chorus Line about a group of actors and actresses in 1975 trying out for the chorus line in a Broadway show. The actors and actresses each tell their stories of why they wanted to be in show business and how they did it, all desperately wanting a place in this particular chorus line. Naturally, they can't all be picked; there are only so many openings. Who will be left behind? This show, until recently, was the longest running on Broadway. Workshopped at the Public Theater, A Chorus Line was developed as a result of a series of late night get-togethers in which performers shared their own stories. The show developed an unusual buzz while it was playing downtown and was eventually transferred to the Shubert Theater where it ran for 6137 performances.
